On the first day of one of my university classes for a somewhat specialized minor (about ten years ago), we classmates were introducing ourselves to each other. One woman began with
“My name is Carol and—”
She was interrupted by a woman I came to refer to as Obnoxious Laugh Woman because her laugh, heard from great distances and at inappropriate times, made me want to stick forks in my ears to escape the pain:
“My name used to be Carol but I can’t stand that name so I changed it to Carrie.”
Nice to meet you, Carrie. Can’t wait to spend the next two years with you.
